Smart Step Implementation Materials
These materials are intended to support the implementation of the Smart Step Initiative:
- Smart Step is not an add-on program; it is an approach to providing quality instruction to all public school students.
- Smart Step is about providing targeted resources to make what is taking
place even better.
- Smart Step is about helping Arkansas educators be the best they can be.
- Smart Step is about teaching and learning.
- Smart Step is about middle level educators maintaining open and
on-going dialogue.
The materials can help the school stay focused on student achievement. The materials can also help in the area of communication.

The Smart Step Implementation Guide includes the following components:
- Sample Time Line. The sample month-by-month timeline and leadership team planning calendar can be modified to meet the needs of the school.
- Facilitation Information. This section defines the role of the leadership team and offers suggestions on facilitation and meeting planning. The roles of the principal and Smart Step facilitator are to coordinate and share information. They are not expected to be the experts in all areas. Do not hesitate to contact the Arkansas Department of Education or education cooperative for assistance.
- Learning Team Organization. Learning teams are small groups of individuals working and studying as they grow professionally. Learning teams focus on student achievement, offering members support and an opportunity to share successes.
- Group Processing Activities. This section offers suggestions on viewing video and live presentations, and several journal examples.
- Evaluation Tools. Sample evaluation forms are provided in this section.
- Quarterly Meeting Workshops. This information will be useful in preparing for the Smart Step quarterly meetings.
Standards-Based Classroom Checklist
The checklist, developed by Dr. Doug Reeves, will be used with the second video session. Please contact a K-4 school in the district to make arrangements for using the Doug Reeves Standards-Based Video Series. The videos may also be duplicated.

Journey Map Suggestions
This simple concept is a way for a school to record its participation in Smart Step. The map can be as simple or as detailed as staff wants it to be. It causes a school to reflect on where it has been and where it is going.
NOTE: It might be helpful to re-visit the school improvement plan in order to determine the most effective way to incorporate the information.
For assistance, please contact the Teacher Center Coordinator at your local Education Service Cooperative.
